How to Be Fuel Efficient When Driving

Illuminated Fuel Gauge

If you’re like many drivers around Crawfordsville, you’re looking for ways to save money and improve fuel economy when you run errands or commute to work. Fortunately, most new Chevy models are incredibly fuel-efficient, but the best way to maximize fuel economy is to establish fuel-efficient driving habits. Here Christi Hubler Chevrolet explains how to be fuel efficient when driving so you can save money and stop at Lafayette gas stations less often. Feel free to contact us with any questions.

Five Tips for Fuel-Efficient Driving Habits

Whether you’re heading out beyond Brownsburg for a weekend road trip or driving to the neighborhood grocery store, these are some helpful tips for how to be a fuel-efficient driver.

  1. Accelerate Slowly: Press down softly on the gas pedal. The harder you stomp on the accelerator, the more fuel you’ll use. Instead, try to accelerate smoothly, aiming for an acceleration time of five seconds to reach 10 mph from a stopped position.
  2. Plan for Traffic: Sitting in heavy rush hour traffic on your Danville drives wastes gas and can put mechanical stress on your drivetrain. Therefore, it’s wise to leave the house 30 minutes early to miss the heaviest rush hour traffic.
  3. Coast to a Stop: Rather than riding the brakes and stomping down hard on the brake pedal, coast to a stop slowly. How can you save fuel while driving on hills? It’s easy! Simply reduce your speed as you go uphill and coast downhill.
  4. Don’t Speed: Vehicles use more gas at higher speeds. To get the best possible mpg on Crawfordsville highways, keep your rate between 55 and 65 mph if possible.
  5. Use AC on the Highway: Your air conditioner uses fuel, so you should use your AC sparingly. The exception is when you’re driving on a highway. That’s when you should use your car’s AC because it’s better for fuel efficiency than rolling down your windows. Open windows at higher speeds create a drag coefficient.
